thread cell

Значение термина thread cell в knolik

thread cell - thread cell (cnidoblast)
thread cell - Very specialized cell found only in coelenterates (of the phylum Gnidaria, i.e. hydroids, jelly-fish, sea-anemones, corals; not in Ctenophora) and in a few animals which prey upon them and 'adopt' their thread cells. Several kinds exist, having different functions, e.g. stinging, adhesion. A thread cell forms within itself an extraordinarily complicated body (nematocyst) consisting of a bladder within which a long hollow thread lies coiled until on stimulation, e.g. by touch of prey, the thread is shot out, and attaches to prey, or in case of stinging type, injects poison into it. Stinging of jelly-fish is due to thread cells present in enormous number on their tentacles.
