transfer rna - A relatively small molecule of RNA, whose function is to place the amino acids that will be linked into a polypep-tide molecule in the specific sequence specified by a molecule of Messenger RNA. There is a different kind of transfer RNA for each of the 20 fundamental amino acids. The amino acid becomes attached to one end of the transfer RNA molecule through the action of a specific activating enzyme, which links the amino acid to ATP and then the resulting compound to its transfer RNA. The other end of the transfer RNA molecule has a distinctive set of three nucleotides which attach (by base pairing, to a matching set of three nucleotides on the messenger RNA molecule. Each successive triplet of nucleotides on the messenger RNA thus specifies a particular amino acid (See also: Code, genetic).
