vagina - vagina
vagina - Duct of female mammal (excluding monotremes) connecting uteri with exterior via a short vestibule; receives penis of male during copulation. Embryologically derived either from terminal part of Miillerian duct or from cloaca. Usually single and median, owing to fusion of lower part of Mullerian ducts in the embryo, but paired in some marsupials. Lined with stratified non-glandular-epithelium. In many mammals undergoes cyclical changes with oestrous cycle and in mice recognition of these changes (from scrapings of vaginal wall known as vaginal smear technique) are of great importance in work on sex hormones.
