ventricle - (1) One of the chambers of the heart, the main pumping part, with thick muscular walls. Receives blood from the auricle (s) and passes it to the arteries. Occurs in molluscs and vertebrates. Fish and Amphibia have a single ventricle; reptiles have a partially divided ventricle, except crocodiles where division into two is complete; birds and mammals have two, right supplying blood to lung, left supplying rest of body. (2) Cavity within vertebrate brain filled with cerebrospinal fluid; lateral ventricles in cerebral hemispheres; third ventricle in rest of fore-brain; fourth in medulla oblongata.
