vertebrata - Most important sub-phylum of the phylum Chordata. Contains the fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, i.e. classes Agnatha, Placodermi, Acanthodii, Choanichthyes, Actinopterygii, Chondrichthyes, Amphibia, Rep-tilia, Aves, Mammalia. Vertebrates differ from other chordates in having a skull, which surrounds a well-developed brain, and a skeleton of cartilage or bone. Not all the fossil ones have been shown to have a vertebral column (though most of them have), so that the term Craniata is perhaps preferable, though in much less common use. Vertebrata is occasionally used as synonym for Chordata.
