vital staining - Staining of cells, or parts of them, while they are living. Several (basic) dyes stain cells placed in them (often called supravital staining): e.g. neutral red stains vacuoles and granules in many cells, Janus green stains mitochondria specifically, methylene blue stains axons. Used in determining morphogenetic movements in embryos. Other (acid) dyes, e.g. trypan blue when injected into an animal (often called intra vitam staining) are taken up by cells, especially by the macrophages of vertebrates.
