xylem - Wood. Vascular tissue that conducts water and mineral salts, taken in by roots, throughout the plant and provides it with mechanical support. Of two kinds, primary, formed by differentiation from procambium and consisting of protoxylem and meta-xylem, and secondary, additional xylem produced by activity of cambium. Characterized by presence of tracheids and/or vessels, fibres, and parenchyma. In mature woody plants makes up bulk of vascular tissue itself and of entire structure of stems and roots, e.g. tree trunk.
