abdul hamid i - Abdul Hamid I (1725-89);
abdul hamid i - Sultan of Turkey. Son of Sultan Ahmed III, he succeeded his brother Mustapha III in 1773. Early in July, 1774, the Turkish army was defeated by the Russians, and on July 21 Abdul Hamid signed the treaty of Kuchuk Kainarji, involving the loss of Turkish suzerainty over the Crimea and other Tartar districts. Another war, with Russia and Austria, resulted in the fall of Ochakov in 1788 after a long siege. Abdul Hamid died April 7, 1789.
