abhorrers

Значение термина abhorrers в knolik

abhorrers - Abhorrers
abhorrers - Name given to persons who, in 1679-80, abhorred the agitation for persuading Charles II to call a Parliament. This, it was thought, would pass the bill excluding James, duke of York, afterwards James II, from the throne. Those who devised the Parliament for that purpose were called Petitioners; their leader was the earl of Shaftesbury, and their protege the duke of Monmouth. The names originated at the time when public opinion was excited against James and the Roman Catholics. In a sense the Petitioners and Abhorrers were ancestors of the Whigs and Tories of a later day-the Whigs being the Petitioners and the Tories, or upholders of hereditary right, the Abhorrers.
