abney, sir william de wive-leslie - Abney, sir william de wive-leslie (1844-1920); abney, sir william de wive-leslie - British chemist and physicist. Born at Derby, he was educated at Rossall and the R.M.A. He received a commission in the R.E. in 1861, and was promoted captain in 1873, being at that time instructor i n chemistry to the R.E., Chatham. Knighted i n 1900, he became adviser in science to the Board of Education. His work became chiefly connected with photography and spectrum analysis, and he contributed largely to the progress made in colour photography and colour printing. He died Dec. 3, 1920.
