abracadabra - Magical word or formula derived from Gnostic-worship. The first known reference to it is in a work by Serenus Sammonicus, a follower of Basil abracadabra ides of Alexandria in the 2nd Ceiltliry A.D. It was supposed to conceal the name God. Usually written on parchment in the form of an inverted cone, and folded in the shape of a cross, it was worn round the neck as a talisman against sickness or danger. Sometimes, after being worn for nine days, it was thrown over the shoulder into an eastward-flowing stream. See Abraxas.
