abrantes - Fortified town of Portugal, in the district of Sant-arem. It is on the ricrht bank of the Tagus, 88 m. by rly. X.E. of Lisbon, and is picturesquely placed on a hill. Its castle is mentioned by Camoens. It has a trade in oil, fruit, wine, and cereals. Founded by the Iberians about 300 b.c., it was colonised by the Romans. Pop. 8,000.
