abstrich - Abstrich (Ger. abstreichen, to wipe off)
abstrich - Term used in metallurgy. In the process of refining lead in a reverberatory cupelling furnace, particularly as practised at Freiberg in Germany, a scum collects on the surface of the molten metal. This scum, or abstrich, is scraped off, and varies in colour from a dark brown to a light yellow, according to its composition. It is principally litharge, i.e. oxidised lead. See Lead.
