acland, john dyke - Acland, john dyke (d. 1778);
acland, john dyke - British soldier and politician. Eldest son of Sir Thomas Acland, he was M.P. for Callington, Cornwall, in 1774. A vigorous advocate of the war with America, he sailed in 1776 with Burgoyne's expedition. His wife is said to have gone up the river Hudson in an open boat to join him. Acland died Oct. 31, 1778. from a chill caught while fighting a duel.
