achelous - Longest river wholly within Greece. Now known as Aspropotamo, or white river, it rises in the Pindus mts., flows S and divides Aetolia from Aoarnania before falling into the Ionian Sea. Its length is about 130 m., and at its mouth are extensive alluvial deposits. In Greek mythology, Achelous was a river-god, son of Oceanus and Tethys.
