Its object was to survey the whole field of human knowledge, and note such "omissions and deficiencies" as should be made, good by learned men. Bacon divided human learning into history, poetry, and philosophy, corresponding to memory, imagination, and reason, as the principal faculties of the mind, and then subdivided these parts. He advocated the use of induction as a means of increasing scientific knowledge. In 1623 the work was issued in a Latin translation, with considerable additions, as De Augmentis Scientiarum.
