adye, sir john miller - British soldier. Born at Sevenoaks, Kent, Nov. 1, 1819, Adye became an artillery officer, and went through the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. He held administrative posts in the Indian and British Armies, and in 1882 went to Egypt as chief of the staff to Wolseley. He was made a G.C.B., was governor of Gibraltar 1883-6, and died Aug. 26, 1900. Adye wrote several books on military subjects. Pron. ad'i.
