aeneid - Aeneid
aeneid - Epic poem in twelve books by the Roman poet Virgil. Based on the legendary adventures of the Trojan hero Aeneas after the fall of Troy, it is really a glorification of Rome and of the Julian house to which the Emperor Augustus belonged, and as such became the national epic. Modelled on Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, it ranks with the greatest poetry of all time. Best edition of text with notes, by J. Conington and H. Nettieship, 1881-3; Eng. prose trans, by Conington, 1872, J. W. Mackail, 1885; verse, John Dryden, 1697, William Morris, 1875. See Virgil.
