aeolus - In classical mythology, king of Aeolia. one of the Lipari Islands. He was the god of the winds, which lie kept shut up in a mountain. According to Homer, he gave Odysseus (Ulysses), when starting on his voyage home, a bag containing the unfavourable winds. The bag was untied by one of the crew, the winds escaped, and the ship was forced to return to Aeolia.
