aiguillettes - Metal tags or points sheathing the ends of ties, prevalent chiefly in the dress of the 16th and 17th centuries. These ties were used in great profusion as ornaments and as substitutes for buttons when passed through eyelet holes. Apparently in the time of Shakespeare aiglets, as they were then called, often consisted of little figures of gold or silver. Survivals are to be seen on the shoulders of naval and military uniforms.
