It was built in 1861-2, at a cost of £53,000, by members of the Smithfield Club. It covers nearly three acres of ground, and the main hall measures 384 ft. by 217 ft.; it has an arched glazed roof of 130 ft. span, and galleries 30 ft. wide. There is a minor hall, 100 ft. sq. The first cattle show was held here in Dec., 1862, and the hall was long used for the Naval and Military Toiirnament.
