Mix ground white-lead with as much finely-powdered red-lead as will make it the consistence of soft putty.
Mix equal parts of white-lead and red-lead, and add as much boiled linseed-oil as is required to give it the proper consistence; or boiled linseed-oil and red-lead mixed into a putty. These compounds are applied by smearing them on a washer of hemp yarn, placed between metallic joints which are to be screwed up. They also answer well for luting the joints between stones, e.g. in cisterns, etc., and dry as hard as stone.
