chromoplast - Pigmented plastid of plant cells. May be red, orange, or yellow, e.g. tomato fruits, carrot roots, containing carotenoid pigments; or green (chloroplasts), containing chlorophyll. Former are common in fruits and flowers, and develop from leucoplasts or chloroplasts; chloroplasts are responsible for the green colour of plants.
