episome - Discrete genetic elements that may become established in bacterial cell either in autonomous condition, replicating and being transferred independently of bacterial chromosome; or in integrated condition, attached to bacterial chromosome, participating with it in genetic recombination and transferred with it. Some episomes are viruses, others are not. Term was first applied to temperate bacterio-phages (See also: Lysogeny) but other episomes without virus characteristics are now known, e.g. F (fertility or sex factor) in colon bacilli. Other genetic elements, plasmids, exist only in autonomous condition, incapable of integration with bacterial chromosome, e.g. a transferable factor (resistance transfer factor, RTF) conferring drug resistance on a variety of enteric bacteria.
