glygoside - Compound yielding by enzymatic or acid hydrolysis a sugar (most frequently glucose) and one or more other substances. Widely distributed in plants, e.g. anthocyanins, amygdalin, sinigrin, digitalin, strophanthin, indican. Formation of some gly-cosides thought to render unwanted substances chemically inert; other functions ascribed to particular glycosides include formation of food reserves, control of invasion by pathogens. When the other substance is also a sugar, di- tri- or polysaccharides result.
