haemoglobin - Respiratory pigment occurring in red blood cells of vertebrates and sporadically elsewhere among animals, e.g. in blood of earthworms, muscles of some round worms. Occurs also in root-nodules of nitrogen-fixing leguminous plants. Scarlet in oxygenated form, bluish-red deoxygenated. Many haemoglobins are known, differing in molecular weight, absorption spectrum, oxygen-combining properties, etc. Each animal species has a different haemoglobin; and (in mammals) that of the foetus is different from that of the adult. A protein with iron in the prosthetic group; closely related to chlorophyll and to cytochrome. See also: Myoglobin.
