heterokaryon - heterokaryon (HETEROGARYON)
heterokaryon - Cell with more than one nucleus, not all of the same genetic constitution. In fungi, a cell, hypha or mycelium with haploid nuclei of different genetical constitution associated together in its cytoplasm; number of nuclei per cell may be stable (dikaryon) or vary. In Fungi Imper-fecti (See also: Mycophytd) variation in relative proportions of different nuclei on different substrates provides a system of somatic variation and adaptation. May be artifically produced by fusion of different plant cells or animal cells. Compare with: Homokaryon.
