lycopodiales - Club mosses. Order of Pteridophyta with fossil history extending back to Palaeozoic. Attained their highest development in Carboniferous and included tree-like forms, e.g. Lepidodendron, Sigillaria. Existing representatives small, evergreen plants with upright or trailing stems bearing numerous small leaves. Sporangia borne singly in axils of leaves, sporophylls occurring in groups at intervals along stem or forming terminal cones. Homo-sporous, e.g. Lycopodium, with small prothalli, wholly or partly subterranean, mycotrophic; or heterosporous, with reduced prothalli remaining largely enclosed by spore wall, e.g. Selaginella.
