macronugleus - Members of Giliophora have two kinds of nucleus; one is the large macronucleus, which is polyploid, divides amitotically and is apparently concerned with the ordinary protein synthesis of the organism; and the other the smaller micronucleus, which divides mitotically and provides the gametes during conjugation. The macronucleus disappears during conjugation, and is reconstituted from the zygote nucleus, i.e. from micronuclear chromosomes. More than one macro-nucleus and micronucleus may occur in each organism.
