oestrogen - Any substance producing changes in the female sexual organs similar to those produced by the naturally-occurring hormone of the vertebrate ovary, oestradiol. Oestrogenic activity is usually tested on mouse vagina. Oestradiol, a steroid, affects the growth and physiological activity of much of the female reproductive system, and is responsible for development and maintenance of many female secondary sexual characters. It is also produced by the adrenal cortex and testis, in small amounts, and by the mammalian placenta. Synthetic oestrogens are not necessarily steroids.
