optic - (Adj.). Of the eye. O. chiasma, structure formed beneath vertebrate forebrain by nerve-fibres of right optic nerve crossing to left side of brain and vice versa. In most vertebrates all the nerve-fibres cross. In mammals, however, 50 per cent remain on their original side, 50 per cent cross. O. nerve, second cranial nerve of vertebrate, really part of brain wall. See also: Retina.
