permeability - Of membrane, extent to which molecules of a given kind can pass through it. Substances differ greatly in the ease with which they pass through a given membrane, e.g. water or fatty substances pass easily, many ions and proteins with great difficulty, through plasma-membrane. Permeability of any biological membrane is itself variable within wide limits. The very numerous membranes of animals and plants, e.g. plasma-membranes or sheets of cells such as the endothelium lining of blood capillaries, produce many osmotic effects (See also: Osmosis) and are of great importance in determining local differences in composition of the organism.
