physiological saline - physiological saline
physiological saline - Solution of salts in water used for temporarily preserving cells alive. It must be isotonic. The simplest is isotonic sodium chloride (0.9 per cent for mammals), but most cells cannot survive long in a solution of a single salt. A more usual saline is therefore Ringer in which potassium, calcium and magnesium chlorides are also present. For optimum survival, Ringer must be buffered to the right pH, usually with phosphates or bicarbonate. Salines do not provide the food requirements of cells (though some contain glucose) so survival in them is limited.
