polyphyletic - A group of species classified together is poly-phyletic when some of its members have had quite distinct evolutionary histories, not being descended from a common ancestor which was also a member of the group; so that, if the classification is to correspond with phylogeny, the group should be broken up into several distinct groups. E.g. phylum Polyzoa is generally regarded as being polyphyletic and is therefore better split into two phyla Endoprocta and Ectoprocta. Compare with: Monophyletic.
