polyspermy - Penetration of numerous sperm into one ovum at time of fertilization. Occurs normally in very yolky eggs (e.g. shark, bird); only one sperm nucleus fuses with egg nucleus, the rest taking little further part in development. May occur abnormally in other eggs, upsetting development.
