crossing-over - Failure of linkage between genes of the same linkage-group, due to mutual exchange, between chromatids of homologous chromosomes, of parts containing corresponding loci. Takes place during pairing of chromosomes at meiosis, and in some organisms, e.g. Drosophila, certain fungi, has also been shown to occur at mitosis. Points on the chromosomes where crossing over has just occurred are visible during meiosis, and are known as chiasmata.
