dormant

Значение термина dormant в knolik

dormant - dormant
dormant - In a resting condition; alive, but with relatively inactive metabolism. Dormancy may involve the whole organism as in higher plants and animals, or be confined to reproductive bodies, e.g. resting spores, sclerotia of fungi, spores of bacteria, and in animals, resting eggs, statoblasts. Dormancy involves cessation of growth. In higher plants it may simply be due to unfavourable conditions, e.g. low temperature, lack of moisture, ending as soon as the limiting conditions are removed. Many seeds, e.g. pea, wheat, though capable of germination immediately after harvesting, are thus dormant in the seedsman's hands. On the other hand a dormant period is a part of an annual rhythm for most plants. Often this type of dormancy has survival value, corresponding with unfavourable conditions, e.g. winter dormancy in deciduous trees, but such a relationship is not universal. After vegetative growth and flowering in spring, many bulbs, e.g. snowdrop, daffodil, have a dormant period coinciding with conditions favourable to the growth of other plants and dormancy frequently occurs amongst plants in moist, tropical climates. Dormancy of seeds in conditions otherwise favourable to germination, is seen in many plants, e.g. hawthorn, Daphne mezereumy and noxious weed wild oats. It is associated, in different plants, with incomplete development of the embryo, impermeable nature of the seed coat limiting entry of water, oxygen, presence of inhibitors, lack of growth stimulators. Dormancy of some deciduous trees is regulated by photoperiod (possibly through activity of a hormone, abscisw acid). Germination of some seeds is also regulated by photoperiod.
