dorsal - (Zool.). Situated at, or relatively nearer to, the back, i.e. the side of the animal which (if not in the animal, at least in the group to which the animal belongs) is normally directed upwards with reference to gravity. In human beings, it is directed backwards. Opposite of ventral. D. aorta, See also: Aorta, Dorsal. (Bot.). Also used of leaves, synonymous with Abaxial.
