embryo - (Bot.). Young plant developed after sexual or partheno-genetic reproduction from an ovum. In seed plants the embryo is contained in the seed and consists of an axis bearing at its apex the apical meristem of the future shoot, or a young bud (plumule) in some species, at the other end the root (radicle); and one or more seed leaves (cotyledons). (Zool.). Animal in process of development from fertilized (or parthenogenetically activated) ovum. The embryo is contained in egg-membranes, or, in viviparous species, in maternal body; and termination of embryonic period is usually taken to be hatching from membranes, or birth.
