embryo sag - Large oval cell in nucellus of ovule of flowering plants in which fertilization of egg and development of embryo occurs; female gametophyte containing a number of nuclei derived by division of megaspore nucleus. Number and arrangement of these differs in different forms but most commonly there is, at micropylar end, the egg-apparatus, consisting of egg nucleus and two others, synergidae; at opposite end three nuclei which become separated by cell walls forming antipodal cells, probably aiding in nourishment of young embryo; in centre, two polar nuclei which fuse to form primary endosperm nucleus. At fertilization one male nucleus fuses with egg nucleus forming a zygote which develops into embryo; second male nucleus fuses with primary endosperm nucleus to form endosperm nucleus, which divides to form endosperm.
