lamella - Thin layer, membrane or plate-like structure, e.g.: (1) One of spore-bearing gills in fruit-body of mushroom or related fungus, attached to underside of cap and radiating from centre to margin. (2) One of series of double membranes within chloroplast which bear the photosynthetic pigments. (3) Of bone. One of thin layers (roughly five micrometres thick) in which the calcified matrix of bone occurs. Frequently disposed concentrically around Haversian canal, or parallel to surface of bone.
