replication defined in 1951 year

replication - replication;
replication - Production of exact copies of complex molecules, such as must occur during the growth and reproduction of any living thing. The only biological molecules in which the original molecule serves as a direct model for the construction of the new are those of DNA, and in some cases possibly RNA. The mechanism of this self-replication involves the separation of the two strands of DNA (when, as is usual, the DNA is double-stranded) and the construction on each of a new 'complementary' strand by base pairing. Each new double strand of DNA thus consists half of new and half of old DNA; the process is called semi-conservative replication.
