abbadie - Abbadie (antoine thomson d' (1810-97));
abbadie - French explorer and scientist. Born in Dublin, of Franco-Irish parentage, he was educated in France and became a naturalized Frenchman. In 1835 he was sent to Brazil by the Academie des Sciences, and travelled in Abyssinia (1838-48). His works include a Geodesy of Ethiopia, a Dictionary of the Amarinna (Am-haric) Language, and a Geography of Ethiopia. He left his estate to the Academie des Sciences on condition that it issued a catalogue of 500,000 stars. His younger brother, Armand Michel d'Abbadie (1815-93), published in 1868 an account of their travels called Twelve Years in Upper Ethiopia.
