abd-el-kader - Abd-el-Kader (c. 1807-83);
abd-el-kader - Algerian patriot. Born near Mascara, he was a sherif—i.e. a descendant of Mahomet—and early performed the pilgrimage to Mecca. He was proclaimed ameer of Mascara in 1832, and, after a protracted war against the French, made formal submission to the governor of Algiers, the due d'Aumale, in 1847. He lived in France until 1852 and at Brussa and Damascus, where he died.
