aberdare, henry austin bruce, 1st baron - Aberdare, HENRY AUSTIN BRUCE, 1ST BARON (1815-95); aberdare, henry austin bruce, 1st baron - British statesman. Born at Dufryn, Aberdare, Glamorganshire, April 16, 1815, he was called to the bar in 1837, and in 1852 became Liberal M.P. for Merthyr. He was home secretary in 1868-73, when he was made lord president of the council and raised to the peerage. The Aberdare Mountains in British East Africa were named after him. He died on February 25, 1895. The 3rd baron, Clarence Napier Bruce, born Aug. 2, 1885, a well-known sportsman, succeeded to the title in 1929. He has played cricket for Middlesex, excelled at rackets, and many times represented Great Britain in real tennis, in Bathurst Cup contests.
