abukir, aboukir, or asu-qir - Village in Egypt, on Abukir Bay, 14 m. N.E. of Alexandria. Near here Nelson at the battle of the Nile defeated the French fleet, Aug. 1, 1798, Napoleon overcame the Turkish army, July 25, 1799, and Abercromby defeated the French, March 21, 1801. In the neighbourhood are extensive Egyptian and Roman remains, including the ruins of Canopus. The old Canopic mouth of the Nile emptied itself into the bay. See Nile, Battle of the.
