abydos, upper egypt - Ancient city of Upper Egypt, near the left bank of the Nile, 350 m. 8. of Cairo. The Egyptians called it reliquary hill, because the head of Osiris was traditionally interred there. The necropolis was the burial-place of the Egyptian kings for many centuries, the tombs including that of Menes, the first historical ruler of Egypt. Seti I built the great temple, the Memnoneion of Strabo, containing a list of kings called the Table of Abydos; and Mineptah built a hall for the Osirian mysteries.
