achaea - Name of an ancient division of Greece. It is on the N. coast of Peloponnesus and is bounded N. by the Gulf of Corinth. Mountainous, with a narrow strip of fertile land along the coast, it is the chief currant-growing district of the mainland. Patras is the chief town. Under the Byzantine Empire Achaea was a despotat or principality, and was conquered by the Turks in 1460. Achaea (or Acha'a) now forms a nomo or department of Greece, with a pop. of 213,291.
