across the plains - Volume of essays by R. L. Stevenson published in 1882. The titular essay describes the author's journey in 1S79 across the United States to San Francisco. He describes his experiences in an emigrant train and puts in a plea for the Red Indians and Chinese. Another essay describes Monterey, the old capital of California. After discussing Fontainebleau, in Random Memories and The Lantern Bearers he deals with episodes of his youth and boyhood. Following an essay on Dreams and a characteristic one on Beggars, the collection ends with Pulvis et Umbra and A Christmas Sermon, the former one of the most remarkable of Stevenson's productions and both containing much of his philosophy of life.
