agape defined in 1939 yearagape - Agape (Gr. agape, love);
agape - Love feast peculiar to the early Christian Church. It preceded or followed the Eucharist, and later became a charitable gathering and a social banquet. Abuses soon arose (1 Cor. 11, and Jude), and the agape was separated from the Eucharist. It was condemned by the councils of the Church, and between the 4th and 7th centuries almost disappeared. It survives in the distribution of blessed bread after the Eucharist in Eastern and French churches, and in certain gatherings held by the Moravian brotherhood. Pron. a'-gape.
